Hello 2014

IMAG2850_1_1 One week I’ll blog three or four times, then next week – nothing.  Then nothing for another week!  I feel like every time I sit down to write a post I get distracted by something.  Like, oh I need to put the chicken in the crock pot.  Or, hey I need to water the plants.  Now is the perfect time to organize all of my Google bookmarks!  That blog post can wait.

Stupid things like that.

Also, I keep heating up my rice pad a hundred times a day.  It fits into the pocket of my hoodie perfectly.  I was trying to fool you with that picture.  It’s a rice pad baby.  My mom made one for me for Christmas.

Here’s a picture outside our window during the snow storm.  We got 10 inches of snow!  I haven’t left the house in four days.

Now that I’m back, should I subject you to a top recipes of 2013 post?  How about a best moments of 2013 post?

Been there, done that.

IMG_20131227_123014 I was reading through the Dalai Lama’s 18 rules of living the other day (from over a decade ago) and it got me all inspired for 2014.  It made me think about some of my goals for 2014.  We’ll see how long these last.

IMG_20140103_150008 #1 – Go someplace you’ve never gone before.  I’m hoping Eric and I can travel more this year.  We’d like to go back to New York City, but we’d also like to go someplace new.

IMG_20140103_145903

IMG_20140103_150054I’d like to see Yellowstone National Park, Salt Lake City, and the Grand Canyon.  I also have urges to go back to Vegas.

561912_10201738969136421_1004565057_n And the beach!  Clearwater Beach was fun.  I want to visit Miami or the Florida Keys next.
I doubt we’ll be able to see all of that in one year, but hey I’m going to try.

1392505_10202144246188094_1160826317_n #2 – Try a new food every month, whether it’s a savory dish I’ve never had before, a new dessert, or a fruit or vegetable I haven’t tasted.

I’m off to a good start this month – a peanut butter sandwich cookie from Bouchon Bakery.  This is going to be an easy goal.

IMG_20140103_145724 #3 – Start cake decorating.  I want to practice and improve my nonexistent skills, and build a portfolio.  I see this taking my blog in a new, fresh direction.  I also want to start making recipes from different blogs and cookbooks, rather than creating my own.  I think I need a break from that.  Example: Cranberry Almond Quinoa bars I made today=bad.

1456067_10202481779586218_443724100_n#4 - I want to go fishing with Eric more this year.  I have an expert fisherman boyfriend and I should be taking advantage of that by learning all of his secrets.  Bonus – fishing is really relaxing and and pretty sunsets occur.

428498_10201073994992483_1631234017_n#5 – This sunset looks like a painting, doesn’t it?  I’d like to paint and draw more this year.  It’s something I used to love to do as it hobby, and it kind of fell by the wayside.  Instead of spending hours on Netflix or reading blogs, I could be painting or drawing.

969926_10201073996472520_535443975_n #6 – or reading.  I need to read more books.

6f9b47e576d83f70a8275ef0b70ae4aa #7 – Spend as much time as I can with Eric and my family.  I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

This is the weirdest picture of some of us and I love it.  We took it at a family wedding and altered it to look like an album from the 70’s.  What would our band name be?

1453325_10201037181597158_609076943_n #8 – Get a kitten!  Heh heh heh.

Breakfast Cat

This probably won’t happen, but a gal can dream!  I’m afraid I’ll turn into a crazy cat lady if I do get one.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a Happy New Yearrrrr!!

  1. I love all your goals for this year! I love to pick ones that will break me out of my routine and give me new experiences :) Arizona is amazing (I'm biased since I live here) but the Grand Canyon is a must see. I would avoid summer at all costs though. Spring or Fall is best :)

    Happy 2014!

  2. Happy new year to you! Don't worry about lack of posts. I think everyone is that way this time of year. I didn't post for a month on my blog and then made a post that probably is the length of three posts - and haven't posted since.

I want to go to the Florida Keys too. I have a husband who dreams of Alaska. For a guy who hates the cold, he seems to gravitate to cold places. Yellowstone is pretty chilly, but it's worth going to, as is nearby Grand Teton. If you decide to check that area out, let me know. I can give you plenty of advice for the area. Kevin and I did a trip to Jackson that included both parks 3 years ago. Jackson restaurants are awesome too! I don't think I need to recommend the Grand Canyon. Not much good dining on the north rim, but it's way more peaceful and less crowded than the south rim.

I have been wanting a cat for the past 15 years. Certain husbands are mean cat haters though. Phooey!

  3. Emily, get a kitten already!!!

To help with your reading goal, here is the current book club book: The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty. I read it already and I recommend it.

Why wasn't a return trip to Chicago on that list?? The negative 17 degree temperatures are gone now, so it's safe to visit :)

  8. What a fun update/recap. I'm in the same boat as you--sit down to do a blog post and a ton of other things come up, and sometimes I'm just too lazy. Those sound like some great goals!

  11. Happy New Year, and good luck with your goals! I didn't make a list myself, since most of my goals this year are a to-do list for my wedding in the fall... but even so, I too want to do more of the creative things that make me happy. :)

  13. Happy New Year, Emily! That rice bag picture was funny - I meant to make some for Christmas gifts but they got shoved aside by life happening.
I like your goals - they're realistic enough that they are doable. You should definitely get the kitten. Here's a practical reason: you can cuddle up with it when the next snowstorm comes - much better than a rice bag!!

  16. Happy New Year Emily! I feel the same way when I'm about to write a blog post, only I think mine is super embarrassing (no post since October :( ) It's funny that you mention reading a Dalai Lama book, I've also had one for a few years now and still haven't come around to reading it mmm maybe now I'll take a look.
You should visit Dallas I could show you around :)
